What to Do When Your Shoes Are Falling Apart
Posted on Feb 26, 2011 under Uncategorized | 4 CommentsIf your shoes are starting to fall apart don’t necessarily throw them away. A lot of the little things can be fixed, either by you are any shoe repair shop. It only makes good sense to get a few more wearings out of your shoes.
It is not unusual for stitching to start to come apart. A shoe repair shop can re-stitch the seems and the shoes are as good as new. Footwear that gets particularly rough use, work boots for example, will need to have the seems re-stitched on a regular basis.
Simple things like, the insoles are coming out, can be re-glued. You can do this yourself with a little household glue. Top lines that are rolling up can also be re-glued. Most shoe repair shops will sell you a cement designed for shoes. Cork bottom shoes (Birkenstock) should have a thin coat of cement spread over the cork on a regular basis.
Have your shoes re-soled. Many of the shoes men will wear can be resoled. Work boots are designed to be re-soled, in fact some work boot manufacturers (Red Wing for one) will re-sole the boots for you if you send the boots to them, attention re-sole department.
Don’t give up on your shoes until they are truly worn out, they cost too much to throw them away before they have given you as much wear as possible.

I have bought work boots that I later found out could not be re-soled. I am a lot more careful these days.

I took a pair of my favorite shoes to be resoled. The price for resoling was a big shock and, when I got my newly resoled shoes back, the fit and feel was a big shock. I realized I would have to break these shoes just like I did when they were new. Next time I will buy a new pair.

The problem is finding a shoe repair shop. We used to have three in town and we are down to one and he isn’t very good.

There is nothing that looks worse than a worn out pair of shoes. Replace them. Having soles replaced is a thing of the past. I had a pair of shoes that I loved so much and didn’t want to give them up so I had them re-soled. They looked real nice but they were so tight I could no longer wear them comfortably and they spent the rest of their days in the back of my closet!
